Tree Removal vs. Tree Trimming: How to Know Which One You Need

We field this exact question more than any other: "Does this tree need to come down, or can y'all just trim it?" Fair enough, nobody wants to pay for a full removal if a trim would've done the job. And nobody wants to keep "trimming a little" on a tree that's actually one bad storm away from landing on the roof. So here's the real way we figure it out on-site.

When trimming actually solves it

Solid trunk, no new lean, ground around the base looks normal, no cracking or heaving. If the problems are limited to a few dead limbs, branches crowding the roofline, or a neighbor tree elbowing in on the canopy, trim it and move on. Deadwooding takes out the immediate hazard, thinning the crown lets wind pass through instead of catching it like a sail. Do this every couple years and a healthy oak or pine will outlive most of us.

When you're actually looking at a removal

Cracks in the trunk. Cavities you could stick a hand in. Mushroom-looking growth at the base, that's decay talking. A lean that's visibly worse than it was last year. And the one that's very East Texas specific: pine beetles. Once those needles go from green to that dull reddish-brown, the tree's done, it's not coming back, and now it's just a dead 60-foot weight standing next to your house. That's a removal, full stop, no amount of trimming fixes it.
